Regis is the most notable pseudonym of Karl O’Connor, a tireless creator who has helped to define the sound of UK industrial techno since the early 1990s, and today still remains one of the most highly regarded creative forces within the British techno/electronic scene. His combination of tonal drones layered with heavy percussion, a hypnotic industrial, layered and tonal sound and raw techno have been inspirational to generations of techno producers. With fellow art terrorist Peter Sutton (Female), O’Connor has been running the influential Downwards label since 1993. He is coming to Lunchmeat Festival to celebrate the label‘s 25th anniversary.
Downwards Records is celebrating 25 years this year. Founded 1993 by Karl O’ Connor (better known as Regis) and Female in Birmingham, it became one of the most influential and long-time running techno label so far. But it’s not just about techno music, Downwards reflects musical variety as the fewest. Next to most closely associated Birmingham techno sound, which was getting released by today’s pioneers like Surgeon, Samuel Kerridge and Regis himself, the label also shares a wide range of different music, from post punk, to industrial, experimental and more. Regis will be one of the artists representing the label in the showcase at Lunchmeat Festival, with others yet to be confirmed.
